The life
& times
of
Warren Swil
V 1 |
| My lovely home is nestled on a hillside some 1,700 feet above the city
of Los Angeles on the slopes of the San Gabriel Mountains, just 15 miles
from downtown LA but worlds apart. |
The Verdugo Mountains (they’re more like hills, really,
rising only to about 3,000 feet) separate the Crescenta Valley – where
I live – from the rest of the LA basin, so La Crescenta has remained the
wonderful country town of 22,000 souls that it’s been for many years. |
My house
is only
nine minutes
from my
office
in Glendale
(pop. 200,000)
making for the
best commute
to work
of anyone
I know. |

This picture was taken the day I moved
in, so don't judge the bare garden by it.

From my front porch (visible under the pine tree
at the top of the steps) on a clear day I can see all the way to Long Beach,
about 35 miles south. At night, the twinkling lights of the downtown skyscrapers
are just visible around the edge of the Verdugos.

The Rose Bowl is
less than five miles away in Pasadena, and right next
to
it is the Jet Propulsion Laboratory – the NASA folks who brought you space
walks, Mars Pathfinder, Jupiter Orbiter … and, more recently, a number
of embarrassingly lost spacecraft. |

This picture was taken Feb. 11, 2007. My lawn (that
bright green, lush thingy) is five months old. All the neighbors are breathing
a sigh of relief. |
